Nonprofit watchdog American Oversight today announced that Liz Hempowicz will join the organization as Deputy Executive Director this month. Hempowicz is a recognized expert in government ethics and transparency who brings to American Oversight more than a decade of experience in public policy, whistleblower protections, and congressional investigations.

Hempowicz joins the organization as it works to investigate and expose the forces undermining democracy in advance of this year’s election, from the election denial movement and threats to government transparency to far-right attacks on civil rights and education. She brings years of experience advocating for accountability, having participated in efforts to improve the Whistleblower Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act, and several other measures aimed at strengthening the public’s right to information.

“I am excited to be part of American Oversight’s aggressive pursuit of transparency and accountability during such a critical year for our democracy,” Hempowicz said. “An informed citizenry is critical to safeguarding the integrity of democratic institutions, and I look forward to joining an organization with a proven ability to use legal tools and strategic investigations to hold our government officials accountable to the public.”

Prior to joining American Oversight, Hempowicz served as the Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs at the Project on Government Oversight, where she developed and spearheaded projects to advance government transparency and combat corruption, including overseeing the work of the organization’s accountability, national defense, and civil liberties programs. This year, she was named one of Washingtonian magazine’s 500 most influential people shaping public policy.

Hempowicz has testified before Congress on issues related to government openness and accountability, and her expertise has been cited by news organizations including CNBC, the Associated Press, Fox News, NPR, the New York Times, Washington Post, and Politico.

“We are thrilled for Liz to join our growing team at such a critical moment in our nation’s history,” said American Oversight interim Executive Director Chioma Chukwu. “Her expertise will be invaluable as we ramp up efforts to ensure anti-democratic actors are held accountable, and demand truth and transparency to protect and advance American democracy.”
