American Oversight Condemns House Homeland Security Committee’s Unfounded Probes into Nonprofits
The committee's actions are the latest effort to weaponize congressional oversight and punish organizations that do not conform to the Trump administration’s political priorities.

On Thursday, nonprofit watchdog American Oversight denounced the House Homeland Security Committee’s baseless investigation into more than 200 nonprofit organizations that provide services under lawful federal contracts — including religious charities and community-based groups.
The probe follows a failed attempt by Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee to insert language into the recent budget bill that would have allowed the Treasury Secretary to unilaterally label nonprofits as national security threats without evidence — a move that could have led to de-banking churches, charitable organizations, and vital community institutions.
“The U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security’s investigation serves no legitimate legislative purpose — it’s about silencing dissent and abusing government power to intimidate nonprofits that serve the public good,” said Chioma Chukwu, Executive Director of American Oversight. “These baseless inquiries echo the administration’s playbook of weaponizing the government against organizations perceived as being at odds with its agenda. Targeting groups lawfully carrying out federally funded work sets a dangerous precedent — crossing a line that should alarm anyone who believes in transparency, fairness, and the essential role these organizations play in our local communities and in maintaining a healthy democracy.”
