Call for Senate Investigation of Trump Interference in US Attorney Selection Process

American Oversight submitted a letter today to Senators Grassley and Feinstein, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, calling on them to fully investigate reports that President Trump personally interviewed a candidate for the post of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

President Trump and his administration have repeatedly violated norms and rules governing our justice system during his first months in office – from calling for the prosecution of political rivals, to demanding loyalty from, and then firing, FBI Director Comey.

Troubling reports have now surfaced that President Trump personally interviewed Jessie K. Liu as a candidate for the post of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, in contravention of the norms and practices surrounding those selections. This direct involvement by the president raises serious concerns, especially given the politically sensitive nature of the U.S. Attorney’s portfolio, as well as the president’s past actions.

In response, American Oversight submitted a letter today to Senators Grassley and Feinstein, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, calling on them to fully investigate this matter, and hold a public hearing, before moving on Ms. Liu’s nomination. With the president and the administration willfully disregarding the rule of law, it’s more important now, than ever, that Congress stands up and holds the White House accountable.

The letter to Senators Grassley and Feinstein is below:
