Following Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Aug. 21, 2024, announcement of an investigation into unnamed nonprofits allegedly registering noncitizens to vote, American Oversight, the Texas Civil Rights Project, ACLU Texas, and League of Women Voters of Texas issued a joint response. The statement notes that supposed “noncitizen voting” is exceedingly rare and that Paxton’s announcement threaten the important work of voter registration and outreach to historically marginalized communities, and urges the attorney general’s office to stop using taxpayer money on anti-democratic actions.
