Statement on Intelligence Committee Chairman Nunes’ Actions

"The job of Congress is to provide thoughtful, responsible oversight of the executive branch. Chairman Nunes' decision to brief the subject of multiple ongoing intelligence investigations is not only unprecedented, it's unethical."

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, March 22, 2017, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes met with President Trump and held a press conference at the White House to discuss the ongoing investigation of the Trump campaign’s contact with Russia. In response, American Oversight Executive Director Austin Evers released the following statement:

“The job of Congress is to provide thoughtful, responsible oversight of the executive branch. Chairman Nunes’ decision to brief the subject of multiple ongoing intelligence investigations is not only unprecedented, it’s unethical. This is the latest troubling example of Congress abdicating its constitutionally mandated oversight responsibilities. The American people deserve a truly independent investigation into Russia’s influence on the 2016 election.

“In addition, Mr. Nunes may have leaked classified information. The FBI should immediately investigate his actions.”
