Andy Carvin is the Director of Investigations, where he leads American Oversight’s high-impact investigations aimed at uncovering government misconduct and revealing who is influencing decision-making behind the scenes. He previously served as Managing Editor and Research Director at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, and as a senior strategist at NPR, where he founded the company’s social media desk in 2008. 

Carvin is an award-winning journalist who has pioneered digital investigative techniques for more than two decades. He received a 2011 Knight-Batten Award for journalism innovation for his reporting during the Arab Spring, and the 2012 Shorty Award for best journalist on Twitter. In 2014, Carvin founded Reported.ly, which used social media to uncover breaking news around the world. Reported.ly received the 2015 Online Journalism Award for its coverage of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack in Paris.

Carvin is the author of Distant Witness: Social Media, The Arab Spring and a Journalism Revolution, published by CUNY Journalism Press. He holds a B.S. in rhetoric and an M.A. in telecommunications policy from Northwestern University.
