American Oversight Launches Investigation Amid Questions About Trump’s Health

We’re seeking White House Medical Unit records following Trump’s latest trip to Walter Reed and concerns raised by numerous medical experts.

Tuesday, American Oversight launched an investigation into the administration’s handling of information related to President Donald Trump’s health, filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests seeking records that could shed light on how the White House Medical Unit (WHMU) monitors, communicates about, and responds to medical issues affecting the nation’s chief executive.

The investigation comes amid heightened public scrutiny of President Trump’s health and the administration’s limited disclosures. Trump’s latest Walter Reed visit — his fourth publicly disclosed medical exam since returning to office  — was described by the White House as a routine preventive checkup.

While presidential health has long been recognized as a matter of public interest, decisions about what to disclose — and when — remain firmly controlled by the White House. The issue has drawn heightened attention in recent years following mounting concerns about then-President Joe Biden’s health and cognitive fitness, underscoring the bipartisan importance of meaningful transparency surrounding a sitting president’s capacity to serve.

Although the White House has repeatedly asserted that Trump remains in excellent health and fully fit to serve, numerous medical experts have raised concerns about the limited nature of the information disclosed, and unresolved questions about visible health issues that could affect the functioning of the presidency. Those concerns also appear to be shared by the public. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found nearly 60 percent of those surveyed do not believe the White House has been transparent about the president’s health, compared to 34 percent who believe it has. Members of Congress have pressed for greater transparency, including  Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, who recently requested additional information about President Trump’s care.

“The American people have a right to know that their government is being honest about matters that could affect the president’s ability to carry out the duties of the office,” said Chioma Chukwu, Executive Director of American Oversight. “Questions about a sitting president’s health are not merely personal — they go directly to the functioning of the executive branch and public confidence in the continuity of government. When the administration offers broad assurances while providing limited underlying information, transparency becomes essential. Our investigation seeks to determine whether officials are being fully forthcoming with the public about issues that directly affect their government.”

Excluding generally applicable Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy compliance materials, we filed targeted requests with the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency seeking records related to medications stocked by the WHMU; emails sent by the president’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella; and communications between senior White House medical officials and Walter Reed medical personnel regarding potential health concerns.

The public has an interest in understanding matters that affect the capacity of the president to fully execute his duties. Unlike private citizens, the president holds a role whose continuity and functioning are critical to the entire federal government, making transparency about WHMU operations a matter of substantial public concern.
